Biography
Rowan Stol (1997, she/her) is a curator, researcher and writer, with a focus on contemporary art as a tool to address, challenge and (re)imagine social structures. With a background in Sociology and Cultural Analysis, she combines methods from the social sciences and humanities to critically engage with (contemporary) art and its institutions. This can be in the form of exhibitions, research projects, public programs, and in writing.
Besides working on various projects as a freelancer, she is curator of Amsterdam Ferry Festival and part of the HF Young Circle of Holland Festival. Previously, she worked as a junior research curator at the Amsterdam Museum, and as editor-in-chief of film platform LA RIOT. In 2020, she was selected as the Dutch representative for the initiative 27 Times Cinema at Venice Film Festival.
Exhibitions she worked on include The Delay, The Wait, The Repeated Sequence (AFF), Metaphormaxxing (Foam), De Maasdamme Collectie and De Gouden Koets (Amsterdam Museum). She (co-)curated and produced a variety of programs, such as the symposium ‘What do we bring to the table?’ of ArtTable Nederland and Amsterdam Art, the two-day symposium The Future of the Dutch Colonial Past, the ongoing program series of Thinking Forest Foundation and multiple editions of Museumnacht . Her writing has been published in Journal of Curatorial Studies, The Future of the Dutch Colonial Past (Amsterdam University Press, 2024) and Metropolis M.
Biografie
Rowan Stol (1997, zij/haar) is een curator, onderzoeker en schrijver met een focus op hedendaagse kunst als middel om sociale structuren aan te spreken, uit te dagen en (opnieuw) te verbeelden. Met een achtergrond in sociologie en cultural analysis combineert ze methodes van de sociale en geesteswetenschappen in een kritische benadering van (hedendaagse) kunst en de bijbehorende instituten. Dit doet ze in de vorm van tentoonstellingen, onderzoeksprojecten, publieksprogrammering, en in geschreven vorm.
Naast verschillende freelance projecten werkt ze als curator bij Amsterdam Ferry Festival en is ze deel van de HF Young Circle van Holland Festival. Voorheen werkte ze als junior curator onderzoek bij het Amsterdam Museum, en als hoofdredacteur van filmplatform LA RIOT. In 2020 was ze gekozen als Nederlandse vertegenwoordiger voor het initiatief 27 Times Cinema op het filmfestival van Venetië.
Tentoonstellingen waar ze aan meewerkte zijn onder andere The Delay, The Wait, The Repeated Sequence (AFF), Metaphormaxxing (Foam), De Maasdamme Collectie en De Gouden Koets (Amsterdam Museum). Ze (co-)cureerde en produceerde verschillende programma’s, waaronder het het symposium What do we bring to the table? van ArtTable Nederland en Amsterdam Art, het tweedaags symposium The Future of the Dutch Colonial Past, de doorlopende programmareeks van Thinking Forest Foundation, en meerdere edities van Museumnacht.
