Biography
Rowan Stol (1997, she/her) is a curator, researcher and writer, with a focus on contemporary art as a tool to address, challenge and (re)imagine social structures. Moving between institutional and independent spaces, she develops context-responsive exhibitions, public programs, and critical writing. She is particularly interested in multiple and non-linear temporalities and their expression in contemporary visual culture and curatorial strategies.
Currently, she curates the annual art commission of Thinking Forest Foundation, which is presented in the forest of Welna Estate nearby Epe, the Netherlands. In the past few years, she was the curator of Amsterdam Ferry Festival, where she created exhibitions that were presented on the public ferries in Amsterdam. Previously, she worked as a Junior Research Curator at the Amsterdam Museum, was part of the HF Young Circle of Holland Festival, and was selected as the Dutch representative for the initiative 27 Times Cinema at the Venice Film Festival in 2020.
Exhibitions she worked on include Tapsei and The Delay, The Wait, The Repeated Sequence (AFF), Metaphormaxxing (Foam), By the Sea (SEA Water), De Maasdamme Collectie and De Gouden Koets (Amsterdam Museum). She (co-)curated and produced a variety of programs, such as the symposium ‘What do we bring to the table?’ of ArtTable Nederland and Amsterdam Art, the two-day symposium The Future of the Dutch Colonial Past and the ongoing program series of Thinking Forest Foundation. Her writing has been published in Journal of Curatorial Studies, The Future of the Dutch Colonial Past (Amsterdam University Press, 2024) and Metropolis M.
Biografie
Rowan Stol (1997, zij/haar) is curator, onderzoeker en schrijver, met een focus op hedendaagse kunst als middel om sociale structuren aan te spreken, uit te dagen en (opnieuw) te verbeelden. Ze beweegt zich tussen institutionele en onafhankelijke kunstruimtes waar ze contextgebonden tentoonstellingen, publieksprogramma’s en kritische teksten ontwikkelt. Ze is met name geïnteresseerd in gelaagde en niet-lineaire benaderingen van tijd en de manier waarop deze tot uiting komen in de hedendaagse beeldcultuur en curatoriale strategieën.
Momenteel cureert ze de jaarlijkse kunstopdracht van Thinking Forest Foundation, die in het bos van Landgoed Welna nabij Epe wordt gepresenteerd. De afgelopen jaren was ze curator van Amsterdam Ferry Festival, waar ze tentoonstellingen ontwikkelde die op de publieke veerponten in Amsterdam te zien waren. Voorheen werkte ze als Junior Curator Onderzoek bij het Amsterdam Museum, was ze deel van de HF Young Circle van het Holland Festival, en was ze de Nederlandse vertegenwoordiger voor het initiatief 27 Times Cinema op het filmfestival van Venetië.
Tentoonstellingen waar ze aan meewerkte zijn onder andere Tapsei en The Delay, The Wait, The Repeated Sequence (AFF), Metaphormaxxing (Foam),By the Sea (SEA Water), De Maasdamme Collectie en De Gouden Koets (Amsterdam Museum).
